What happens if you enter a wormhole?

There is no question why science fiction has developed a huge affection for wormholes and associated scientific but mysterious objects. These objects time and again attract our eyeballs and never fail to impress us again and again with their strangeness.

Wormholes have been one such mystery that arrives with loads of mystery engulfed in them. They are essentially a shortcut for travel in space. A wormhole can be assumed as a kind of tunnel connecting two distinct points in space-time.

They are the things that can connect far-away galaxies or even far-away universes and allow travellers to without having to cover all the in-between distance. Wormholes are a very efficient way of travelling through space without using huge quantities of fuel.

But scientists still aren’t able to solidify the thought that whether wormholes could possibly be a method of space travel, because this has a certain lot of challenges associated with it. So, In this post, we’ll look at What happens if you enter a wormhole? lets know a bit more about wormholes!

How are wormholes formed?

Wormholes may be naturally-occurring or could have a man-made origin.

  • Scientists are yet to discover a huge wormhole, they firmly believe that wormholes exist at the microscopic level and can transfer various particles from one position to other and may grow in size.
  • Scientists have also proposed the formation of man-made wormholes with quantum foam. It is a sub-atomic structure that is about a billion times smaller than the nucleus of an atom. As expected, technology for such a small substance isn’t available at the moment.

Are wormholes and black holes different?

Black holes and wormholes are essentially the same except for the fact that a wormhole creates a pathway between two points in the universe whereas a black hole is completed a dead end known as the singularity. This endpoint is so dense that nothing can escape it.

The similarities between a wormhole and black holes led to further problems that could a black hole and wormhole actually be the same. We will discuss about this topic in some other articles separately.

Can humans enter wormholes?

Before entering into wormholes, the first thing to do is to find one. Yes, we haven’t been able to find a wormhole till yet and they remain to be concepts in our brain. There is certainly a possibility that there might not be a single wormhole due to some strange scientific principles which we might not know as of now.

Fortunately or unfortunately, even if they are some concepts, we don’t how they would work and if someone could travel through them. It remains to be seen whether we could develop some advanced technology in the near future to explore wormholes more and maybe manipulate them more.

Is time travel possible through wormholes?

The biggest question and mystery surrounding wormholes are whether they could allow us to travel through time. First and foremost, not enough is known about them. Secondly, certain studies which do tend to suggest some situations, say that time travel through wormholes isn’t possible as a vehicle passing through the wormhole would instantly collapse.

Even if you get a wormhole ready for travelling humans, one needs to the laws of special relativity to deal with time. When travelling closer to the speed of light, you experience time dilation. It means greater the motion through space, less is the movement through time.

For instance, assume a wormhole with one end closer to Earth and another end in some distinct galaxy nearing the speed of light. Into the relativistic end of the wormhole, you arrive on Earth after a small time while you may have travelled for more years.

This means that if a wormhole was created 40 years ago, it would be possible to travel back in time. This way of time travel excludes the grandfather paradox which means a traveller could kill his grandfather and thereby preventing his existence.

What was Einstein’s view regarding wormholes?

Einstein had a huge part to play in the original concepts of wormholes along with the other scientists Nathan Rosen. He theorised them to be the pockets of space that may act as a bridge. He also explained to them that if you fall down the drain of a bathtub and instead come out of another bathtub in someone else’s bathroom.

Conclusion

Despite every negative available regarding wormholes, scientists aren’t leaving any stone unturned. Continuous research has been in progress so that researchers could gather more information about them.

So far, nothing of the size of the human-transferring wormholes have been developed and none look likely in the near future. But whatever we have got till now, it is certainly promising that we are on the right path and the big leap in human space travel sciences is not far away.

It is clear, wormholes are still a mystery for us albeit they are an interesting mystery. They keep us on our toes and keep us remembering that there is so much more to know about them and how little we know about the universe.
