An Overview of Armenia – Azerbaijan war

On September 27, 200 new clashes erupted between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the Nagorno Karabakh mountain which is the centre of the entire conflict. Since 1980, thousands of people have been killed and wounded. Both the countries reached a cease-fire, but the peace treaty is never signed between the two countries.

The conflict between the two former Soviet countries is still going on. In the recent battle, Dozens of people got killed. Turkey is with Azerbaijan in the outgoing war and Turkey cleared its stand while Russia urged both the countries to maintain peace in the Nogro Karabakh region.

What is the reason behind the war?


The Nogro Karabark is the centre of the entire conflict. Since a decade, it has more than 150000 population and is surrounded by the mountains and forest. Nagro Karabark is located in Azerbaijan, but the Armenians people populate it. In 1992, when both the countries Armenia and Azerbaijan had joined the Soviet bloc.

Russia handed over the region to Azerbaijan. In 1988, National assembly of Nagorno Karabakh dissolved the autonomous status of the region and joined the Armenian side. But at that time, Azerbaijan suppressed the move, which resulted in the military conflict in that area.


In 1991, when the Soviet Union disintegrated, both the countries became Independent and the clashes turned into a bloody war. Many of the citizens were injured, and millions of people were killed. The war between both countries continued for three years and ended in 1994 with the cease-fire accord, Armenia took the region and handed it to rebels.

The Armenians rebel announced Nagorno Karabakh as an independent state, but not as a single country and gave it international recognition. The international community still considers Nagorno Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan.

What sparked the recent conflict?

Armenia and Azerbaijan blamed each other on the recent violence, in which 16 people were killed, and dozens of people were injured.


Baku said that they retaliated the Armenians attack in which Azeris were killed and injured. Azerbaijan’s defence ministry released the statement and claimed that the troops were taken back to the territories from the Armenian forces.


In response, the Armenian government blamed Azerbaijan for disturbing the peace and launching a large scale military operation in the region. Armenian government claims the killing of dozens of Armenians and injuries by the Azeris military operation.

Armenians accused Azerbaijan of shelling all night. Armenia shot down two Azerbaijan drones, but the report is still not confirmed by any media report.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashiniyan spoke with Iran government. Hassan Ruhani has not shared any further details. He expressed concern about the ongoing clash between Armenia and Azerbaijan except that the Iranian government does not share different moves.

Armenians Prime Minister said that he is not considering help from Russia as the post-Soviet security treaty between Russia and Armenia government because of the disintegration of the Soviet Union.

Turkey’s role in the recent conflict

Turkish and Azeris share the same culture and traditions. Many times, both the countries said that they are two countries but one nation. Most of the Azerbaijan population are of Turkish origin.

On the other side, Turkey and Armenia have a bitter relationship, Turkey closed its border for Armenian during the 1990 war, and Turkey does not have any diplomatic coordination with Armenia.


The main reason behind the bitter relation between Turkey and Armenia started from the ottoman empire. Ottoman killed 1.5 million Armenians, and Turkey refused to accept the genocide in 1915.

Turkey established a strong relationship with the Azeris, ruled by a dynastic ruler. In July, Turkey exercised the joint military operation with Azerbaijan after the border clash erupted.

The recent clash between Armenian and Azerbaijan put Russia into a tough spot. Russian have good diplomatic relations with both Armenian and Azerbaijan and provide military assistance to both countries.

But when we talk about Armenia, it depends more on Russia than Azerbaijan. Russia has established a military base in Armenia. Russia pretends to balance the war between both countries in public.

Still, it is providing military assistance to Armenia from the back door as it is more dependent on the Russian equipment.

Recent update on the Armenia and Azerbaijan conflict.

The Azerbaijan Government makes a claim of destroying an Armenian’s 300 air defence missile system and killing more than 2000 people. Dozens of people getting injured during the war in the Nagorno Karabakh region.

Azerbaijan defense ministry has announced 2300 Armenian personal have killed or wounded in the war. On Sunday, Armenian’s 300 air defence missile system stood destroyed at the frontline in Karabakh along with 200 artillery and 130 tanks. Azerbaijan also claimed 20 Azeris killing in the Armenians attacks.


NATO alliances France and Turkey gave an angry response and international tension mounted over the clash between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Armenia and Azerbaijan accused each other of breaking the cease-fire accord. This lead to killing and injuring hundreds of people.

The defence ministry of Nagorno Karabakh said that there are more than 23casualties on Wednesday. The NATO countries have raised concern about stability in the region, a corridor for a pipe carrying oil and natural gas. Some international communities raise fear on the issue; it might draw Russia and Turkey in the battle.

Some of the NATO countries worried about the Turkish move, what if Turkey starts giving military assistance to Azerbaijan.


France also stands with Armenia as it supported Armenian’s occupation in Azerbaijan. Armenia and France share the same ancestral history, France is the home of many Armenians. France stands with Armenia in all the situations as said by Emanual Macron, and it wants to remove Azerbaijan from Armenian land.

A peace settlement between Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan’s

Update 16 November, 2020

After six weeks of ferocious and bloody war, Russia brokered a new peace settlement between Armenia and Azerbaijan. According to the Nagorono-Karabakh authorities more than 2317 people have lost their lives and thousands have been uprooted.

The main aim of signing this Triangular Peace settlement is to put an end to the rivalry between these two nations. Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev, russian president Valdamir Putin and Armenian prime minister Nikol Pashinyan signed this peace settlement. After the beginning of fierce battle between Armenia and Azerbaijan several ceasefire agreements have been made but none of them became successful.

The triangular peace settlement signed by Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan came into effect on Tuesday to terminate the battle between the nations. According to the current peace settlement both the nation will exchange their captives and return their deads.  Both of the nations will hold the currently occupied territories, which is in the favour of Azerbaijan because during the battle Azerbaijan have reclaimed over 15 to 20% of its territories which is lost in the recent conflicts.

Further in the treaty, all the army functioning will remain suspended, approximately 2000 Russian military took the position and will maintain peace for at least 5 years in line of contact (LOC), Nagorno-Karabakh and along the lachin corridor that connects the region to Armenia. A Russian controlled new corridor will also open from Nakchivian to Azerbaijan.

Current situation in Armenia and Azerbaijan’s

Armenian prime minister Nikol Pashinyan illustrated the peace settlement as “Unspeakably Painfull” .

However, Azerbaijans president Ilham Aliyev declared the peace settlement as “Historic” he continued that Armenia is negotiating just because of Azerbaijans military success. He further wrote on twitter that this statement has historic significance

Orla Guerin from BBC, described this settlement as a victory for Azerbaijan and defeat for Armenia. Osama bin Javaid from Al Jazeera stated that all the people of Baku which is the capital city of Azerbaijan, came down the streets and celebrated after listening over the success of peace settlement.

The villagers outside Nagro-Karabkh set their homes on fire before fleeing to Armenia because those houses were on disputed territory. According to the peace settlement, Kalbajar district which was previously controled by Armenia will now go under Azerbaijan and on sunday Azerbaijan will regain the control of Kalbajar.  One of the residents of Kalbajar district said that “This is my house, I can’t leave it to the Turks”. 

According to the new peace settlement Armenia should return Kalbajar and Aghdam district by 20th November and the lachin district by 1st december.
